Dietrich von Sachsen

Persona

Born in the Year of Our Lord 1223, Meister Dietrich von Sachsen (he/him) is the third son of a minor nobleman from Laußig, north-east of Leipzig. Realizing that the odds of inheriting enough of his father’s estate to support himself were slim at best, in 1241 Dietrich set north to Prussia to serve as a “guest crusader” with the Teutonic Order in Prussia with little more than a horse, his armour and a stout blade. The Teutonic Order had established a series of castles in the recently conquered territory of the pagan Prussians and Lithuanians, and Dietrich saw the ongoing Prussian Crusade as a means to gain land and income.

Dietrich’s arrival was perhaps ill-timed, for in the following year, the First Prussian Uprising took place, pitting the badly outnumbered Teutonic Knights against the local tribes. Dietrich fought in a few skirmishes against the Prussians and Pomeranians, before he and the order were defeated along the banks of the Osa River. 400 Teutonic Knights, including their Marshall, perished. Dietrich was wounded and left for dead, but he miraculously survived, floating downstream until he reached the sea. Dazed and wounded, he was picked up by fishermen.

SCA History

Dietrich joined the Society in February 2008, along with a number of his friends from University. Of that group, he is the only one still playing regularly.

Dietrich is a member of House Glyndmere, and is that Household's southernmost permanent member. In addition, he is a belted member of House Ōkami (as Akashi), and a member of the Company of the Red Cloak. He was squired to Sir Belgar Thorbjornsson, but eventually was fostered to Sir Elizabeth Mortimer. He has a single man-at-arms in the form of Lady Claire de Lyon.

Dietrich is a member of the Bardic College of Ealdormere and the Royal Ealdormere Moneyers Guild. He also holds the distinguished (or dubious) title of Token Male of the Bookbinders Guild of Ealdormere.

At the end of 2019, Dietrich was invested as Master of the Baronial Mint of Ramshaven by their Excellencies Penn and Lucia.

During the second year of the great plague, Dietrich was appointed General of the Bardic Army of Ealdormere for the First Bardic War. Along with their allies of the East, Atlantia, Æthelmearc, and Trimaris, Ealdormere's Bardic Army was victorious.

Dietrich was put on Vigil for the Order of the Pelican at Ealdormere Court during the 50th Pennsic War.
