Der Welfengau
The Canton of Der Welfengau is one of the three Cantons located in the Barony of Ramshaven. Encompassing the mundane lands of the Region of Guelph, Der Welfengau was founded in A.S. 17 as the Shire of der Welfengau prior to the formation of the Barony of Ramshaven.
Origin of the Name
The root of Der Welfengau comes from the German “Welf”, referring to the House of Welf (historically rendered in English as Guelf or Guelph, hence the connection to the City.) Many German Princes, Emperors, and later British Monarchs came from the House of Welf.
History
According to Lord Colyne Stewart's History of Ealdormere, Der Welfengau was founded in A.S. 17 as a Shire before it became part of The Barony of Ramshaven. However, according to The Chronicles of Canton Der Welfengau, penned by Lord TSvetan Arinsson - at the time, the Seneschal - Der Welfengau became a Canton in the Barony of Septentria two years later. This chronicle tells us that Der Welfengau hosted many a Collegiate.
In December of A.S 16, Lord Tsvetan - having seen a vision of a great silvery griffon of ruby eyes and flaming tongue - gathered together with four other gentles to form the Canton of Der Welfengau at the Septentrian Twelfth Night in the Canton of Rising Waters. These gentles are recorded as Tessa of the Deep Havens; Elspeth of the Green Forest; Shelley Kirkbride; and Sophia. They formed the first officers of Der Welfengau. The device of Der Welfengau was registered in A.S 20.
In A.S 36, the Canton of Der Welfengau was granted an augmentation of arms by Princess Tangwystl for services to the crown.
