+**Historically**, during the Mayoral administration of His Worship Grimwulf the Hairy, it was alleged that a document of non-specific antiquity was discovered; a Royal Charter. This Charter, allegedly signed by King Cariadoc of the Middle (whether Cariadoc I or Cariadoc II never was established), declared Eoforwic a Royal Citie, establishing a Corporation of a Lord Mayor, Aldermen and such officers as a Sheriff and Rat-catcher, with subsequent exemptions from various Royal taxes, tariffs, duties and so forth. It also included clauses about governance of such ne'er-do-wells as minstrels, travelling players and salesmen of snake-oil (or words to that effect). The story goes that Grimwulf showed the Charter to Duke Cariadoc himself, who said he had no memory of it. Grimwulf pointed out that a piece of jewellery had been left within the folded Charter. Cariadoc took the jewellery, said "I wondered where I'd left that," and thus was the Charter authenticated.
