Inter-Kingdom Anthropology

Inter-Kingdom Anthropology (or IKA) is the practice of comparing cultural differences between various Kingdoms within the Society for Creative Anachronism. Because of the large size of the SCA, many Kingdoms have developed their own traditions and customs over almost half a century.

The phrase “Inter-Kingdom Anthropology” likely developed on the Stefan's Florilegium messageboards in the early or mid-90s.

Some examples of IKA include:

  • Sumptuary Laws, including restrictions on the colours of Belts.
  • The location of Court Baronecies within the Order of Precedence.
  • Bowing to furniture (usually thrones).
  • The wearing of coronets.
  • Award structures.
  • Attitudes towards SCA activities, such as the Bardic Arts.
