May of ye Wolde

Persona

May of ye Wolde (she, her) is the lady of a minor noble house in England, during the reign of King Edward III. Following the deaths of her mother and all but one of her siblings during the Black Death, May found herself in the unique position of being indulged by her bookish father, learning to read and write beyond the talents of the majority of her peers. She learned most of what she knows about fine sewing, household management, and the more courtly arts of dance and music while fostered in the household of one of her father's cousins.
remainder mostly undetermined: I have generally imagined that she is a widow, giving her a bit more freedom to govern her own affairs. Still a minor noble–likely in charge of just one manor house and its nearby fields and town. However, given the upheaval wrought by the droughts, famines, and plague of the 14th century, she is likely dealing with the new reality of the need to grant greater boons to retain serfs – or prevent them running off to new lands where they can present themselves as yeomen, unbound to the land.

Whereabouts

May currently resides in the Canton of Caldrithig, within the Barony of Skraeling Althing.

Past Offices

Canton Pursuivant in Caldrithig, for roughly two years during the time their Excellencies Menken and Eleanor were baron & baroness of Skraeling Althing.

SCA History

May first encountered the SCA at a club fair display in the College der Welfengau when an advertisement claiming “Robin Hood did it for the poor. We do it for fun” caught her eye. Although her first A&S activity may technically been helping Emma Danskona with some lace-making at a newcomer's meeting, May quickly encountered her first and abiding A&S love: dance!

During her time in the Barony Ramshaven, May learned a lot about dance, and began teaching and helping at demos. She also learned a little about lots of things: playing recorder, singing period rounds and other songs, serving feast, making period clothing, calligraphy, illumination, and even a little bit of fencing.

After completing her mundane Bachelor's Degree at the University of Guelph, May returned home to Caldrithig. She continued to share her love of dance at local practices and events, and continued to practice calligraphy, illumination, recorder playing and costuming. This included becoming involved with the Canton of Greyfells while attending the local university for a mundane BEd degree.

Although modern affairs have led May's level of participation to waver over the years, she continues to find herself drawn back. In particular, she tries to find time for dancing, and is currently trying to make more space and time for not only that but singing, choreography, and archery–and trying to interest her two children in this hobby.

Interests

May has dabbled in many arts and sciences in the SCA. Enduring interests (and/or things she currently wants to focus on): dancing, choreographing dances to music that makes her feet want to move, singing, and making garb for herself.
