The office of Herald (or Pursuivant as it is sometimes called) is responsible for the maintenance and registry of SCA heraldry and the Order of Precedence. Heralds are also charged with encouraging all members to develop period-accurate heraldry and register their heraldry with the College of Heralds.

Each Canton, Shire, Barony and Kingdom has the office of an official herald who are automatically members of the College of Heralds. A group herald is a reporting officer, whose reports are due quarterly.

There is sometimes a distinction made between heralds and “voice heralds” where “voice heralds” are persons responsible for “crying an event”; that is, loudly and clearly making announcements at events for all to hear. In addition, every event requires at least one “court herald” who stands in Court and acts on behalf of the sitting Royalty to call people forward and make proclamations. Generally speaking, it is a good idea to have different people “crying the event” and serving as “court herald” owing to the limits of the human voice.
