Song-niang [pronunced as “sewn”] is a Han Chinese woman trained the arts of music, dance, and poetry. She was born near the end of the Tang dynasty in Huazhou (華州, in modern day Shaanxi) on the first day of the seventh month in the fourth year of Qianning (乾寧四年七月初一, by modern reckoning the 6th of August, 897 A.D.), during the first reign of Emperor Zhaozong. Her family was in the capital city of Chang’an (長安, modern day Xi’an) when the emperor was assassinated, and in the political aftermath she lost her family and was displaced to the eastern city of Luoyang (洛阳) and later further south into the peninsula of Leizhou (雷州).
