Grant of Arms

A Grant of Arms is the middle level of armigerous rank awarded by the Crown. In Ealdormere it is never given on its own, rather an individual is normally inducted into one of three polling orders.

A Grant of Arms is given for 'journeyman' level work. The recipient is beyond a beginner's level in his or her chosen discipline, but has not yet achieved mastery. In addition, the following qualities are looked for in every recipient of a grant level award:

• A willingness to teach
• Presentation of a reasonably authentic appearance
• An example of courtesy and chivalry worthy of emulation

Recipients may style themselves 'The Honourable Lord' or 'The Honourable Lady'. They are properly addressed as 'Your Ladyship' or 'Your Lordship'.

The Grant of Arms exists society-wide. However, each Kingdom has additional awards which automatically bestow an Grant of Arms on the recipient if he or she does not already have one. In Eadldormere, these awards induct the recipient into three polling orders which are as follows:

• The Order of Thorbjorn's Hammer, given for skill in the martial arts.
• The Order of the Crucible, given for skill in the arts and sciences.
• The Order of the Wain, given for service.
